Before You Travel

  • All travellers visiting Tanzania must carry a passport valid at least six months after arrival.

    Tourist visas can be obtained:

    Online (e-visa) before travel
    On arrival at major international airports

    Main airports:

    • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
    • Julius Nyerere International Airport – Dar es Salaam (DAR)
    • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport – Zanzibar (ZNZ)

    Typical visa fee: USD 50 per person (subject to nationality and change).

    We recommend bringing USD cash for the visa payment if obtaining the visa on arrival.

    Documents Required

    • Passport valid at least 6 months after arrival
    • Return or onward flight details
    • Accommodation or safari itinerary
    • Visa payment (if applying on arrival)

    A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required if arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is present.

  • Money

    The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).

    • ATMs are available in major towns such as Arusha, Moshi and Dar es Salaam
    • Hotels and lodges accept Visa and Mastercard
    • Small shops and markets prefer cash

    US Dollars are widely accepted in tourism areas. Please bring newer notes issued after 2009.

    We recommend exchanging or withdrawing a small amount of local currency upon arrival at the airport.

  • We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance including:

    • Medical coverage
    • Trip cancellation
    • Emergency evacuation

    For additional safety, travellers can also purchase Flying Doctors evacuation insurance, which covers emergency air evacuation within East Africa.

  • Tanzania is located in a malaria-risk region, although the risk for short safari stays is generally low.

    Recommended precautions:

    • Use mosquito repellent
    • Wear long sleeves in the evening
    • Sleep under mosquito nets provided in lodges

    Some travellers choose malaria prophylaxis. Please consult your doctor before travelling.

  • Kenya uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). Many safari camps operate on solar or generator power, so electricity may only be available at certain hours. A power bank is useful for charging phones and cameras.

  • Please help protect Kenya’s wildlife and environment.

    • Do not litter
    • Do not feed animals
    • Follow your guide’s instructions
    • Respect local cultures and traditions

    Wildlife products such as ivory, animal skins, coral or shells are illegal to buy or export.

  • Tanzania is home to more than 120 ethnic groups, creating a rich mix of traditions and cultures.

    The coastal areas and Zanzibar are predominantly Muslim, and visitors are encouraged to dress modestly when visiting towns or villages.

    Recommended guidelines:

    • Shoulders and knees should be covered in public areas
    • Beachwear is appropriate only at the beach or hotel
    • Always ask permission before photographing people
